A Champaign County grand jury indicted a man involved in a high-speed chase with law enforcement this week.

Martel D. Owens, 30, of 240 E. Main St., Springfield, is charged with one count each of failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer and unauthorized use of a vehicle stemming from Monday’s pursuit.

The chase began on South U.S. Route 68 after a Champaign County deputy observed Owens driving 85 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour speeding area. Despite being ordered to pull over, Owens continued to travel at a high rate of speed while passing other motorist in a reckless manner.

The vehicle was eventually found abandoned on West County Line Road in a lane just east of Carter Lumber Company. Owens was found behind a residence in the area and taken into custody.

A sheriff’s report states that Owens said he did not have permission from the owner of the vehicle to drive the vehicle. The vehicle’s owner confirmed this saying that Owens did not have a driver’s license.

The grand jury indictment notes that Owens had previously been found guilty in two separate criminal cases where he was charged with failure to comply with police from Clark County in January 2004 and September 2007.

Owens is scheduled to appear in court on April 16 for an arraignment hearing.
